The artist shared in her Instagram reel: “I was diagnosed with early breast cancer. I’m highlighting the word ‘early’. Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding onto the word ‘early’.”
What exactly is early breast cancer? Breast cancer is divided into different stages (0 to 4) depending on various factors, such as the size and extent of the cancer. Breast cancer in stages 0 to 2 are generally considered to be early-stage breast cancer. Fortunately, the outlook for early breast cancer is generally positive. Later in the video, Jessie J mentioned that following her performance at Capital’s Summertime Ball, she’s going to “disappear for a bit to have my surgery”. She further mentions that she’s “getting to keep my nipples”, suggesting that she’s going to undergo a nipple-sparing surgery, a surgery on the breast which preserves the nipples.
Treatment for early breast cancer typically involves local treatment of some kind, such as a lumpectomy or breast conserving surgery, which involves removing only part of the breast affected by cancer. Other treatment options such as radiation therapy and hormone therapy may also be considered depending on the type and stage of cancer.

Jessie J then joked in her video that she will “come back with massive t--s” and that “it’s a very dramatic way to get a boob job”. While she clarified in the caption of her video that she was joking, breast reconstruction is indeed an important consideration for breast cancer patients.
Breast cancer surgery can significantly impact a person’s emotional and mental well-being. Breast reconstruction can help to rebuild not only the physical aspects but also the emotional facets of one’s identity after breast cancer surgery and should be a point of discussion with the healthcare team.
