Hi, my name is Hwee Lin. This is my experience with cancer.
After consulting my general practitioner (GP) for persistently sharp pain in my breast, I was referred to a hospital for further investigation. This led to an eventual diagnosis of stage 2 breast cancer.
While I was initially recommended a mastectomy, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, targeted therapy was added to my list of treatment methods.

I first noticed a sharp pain in my breast, which persisted and didn’t go away. Concerned, I sought medical advice from my general practitioner (GP). This led to a referral to the local hospital for further evaluation, where I was ultimately diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer.

Receiving the diagnosis filled me with fear. I felt helpless, nervous, and overwhelmed by the uncertainty of what lay ahead.

Following the diagnosis, I made changes to my nutrition, opting for a healthier diet to support my well-being.

Doctors initially recommended that I undergo a mastectomy and also receive chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. However, after taking their recommendations into consideration, conducting my own research and seeking a second opinion to learn about more treatment options, targeted therapy was added to my treatment plan. In fact, I’m currently receiving targeted therapy. I also opted for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for alternative treatment.

Despite the effectiveness of the treatment, I experienced some side effects that have impacted me. Fatigue, hair loss, and nausea and vomiting were significant side effects that I had to go through. Managing these side effects has been a struggle, but with improved nutrition and prescribed medications, I have been able to alleviate some of the discomfort.

Since my diagnosis, there have been significant shifts in my lifestyle. One notable change has been my approach to health and wellness. I've made a conscious effort to improve my diet, opting for more nutritious meals every day. Additionally, I have been more committed to more regular physical activity.
Another notable change is my relationships with my children. Since being diagnosed with breast cancer, we’ve grown closer; we spend more time together and embark on more frequent yearly trips as a family.
My plans for the near future are centered around family and personal fulfillment. For my family, we have plans to travel to Ipoh, Malaysia to reconnect with relatives and strengthen family bonds. As for myself, I envision traveling with some of my church friends.

Throughout my cancer journey, my greatest dream has been to retire and devote my time to caring for my grandchildren at home. The thought of family has served as a powerful source of motivation, giving me the strength to persevere through the challenges of cancer treatment.

Over the course of being diagnosed and treated for cancer, my greatest fear has been the thought of not being ready to leave this world. I still have numerous things I aspire to accomplish, and I yearn to witness the growth of my grandchildren. Additionally, the fear of my daughters having to navigate life without their mother fills me with immense worry. To quell these fears, I am attending church more often to seek advice from my pastors and friends, as some of my friends from church have cancer or are caregivers of people with cancer. Their support and advice have been an immense help. I’m also spending as much time as I can with my daughters and grandchildren.

Today, my emotions are mostly of optimism as I find myself feeling grateful for the blessings in my life.

Honestly, the fear of leaving my family behind still haunts me. However, entrust your worries to God, for He knows what is best. Take care of yourself, nourish your body with healthy foods, and seek supplements to bolster your strength. You have the resilience to overcome this.
