Mina 18d9b Profile

Hi, I’m Mina. I’m a cancer survivor.

I’m relieved to say that I’m in remission now and I no longer need any medication anymore.

Symptoms Mammogram 1

I had no symptoms, nothing felt out of the ordinary. I was leaving my previous job, so I used my last month of health insurance to do some health checkups. During the mammogram, they found a tumor. Just like that, I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. The diagnosis stated that I have a 90% 5-year survival rate.

Clara Biggest Fear

The moment I received my diagnosis, I felt frightened, helpless, and worried, all at once. The fear is hard to describe.

Lifestyle Healthy Diet 5

I made some changes to my lifestyle after the diagnosis. I cut down my alcohol intake significantly. I used to have about six drinks a week, but now I have only two. I also started eating healthier 3 to 5 days a week.

Medical Care Lumpectomy 1

Initially, the treatment plan consisted of mastectomy (complete removal of the breast) and other therapies. I was quite angry and very anxious, discouraged and scared at that time.

But as I had a good response to the neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiation therapy, my doctor recommended lumpectomy (breast-conserving surgery) instead of a full mastectomy. After doing some research, I agreed and opted for the change in treatment. My mood had also improved, although I still felt a little anxious.

In addition, I took some nutritional supplements and traditional Japanese herbs to complement my cancer treatments.

Side Effects Hair Loss 3

I suffered hair loss from the cancer treatments. I bought a cold cap for it. Other than that, I lost my appetite while experiencing nausea and vomiting. I tried to improve my nutrient intake, hoping it would make me feel better.

Ashanti Lifestyle

I maintained the lifestyle changes I made since beginning my cancer journey. I don’t drink much anymore, maybe just a glass now and then. I also committed to a healthier diet every day of the week. My parents and I are also in touch much more often now.

Aspirations Bakery Mina

In the next two years, I plan to travel to Japan to visit my relatives. Plus, I'm excited to be the bridesmaid at my sister’s wedding next fall. After leaving my previous job, I wanted to open my own bakery. I had to put those plans on hold because of cancer treatment. But now, I’m thinking of doing this in the next three years, maybe. The thought of having my own bakery motivated me to get better and save up some money again to do the things I want to do. My biggest dreams of all are:

  • To get a new house with my partner
  • For my parents to be healthy and not so worried about me
Emotions Neutral 2

Nowadays, I feel kind of neutral.

Emma Biggest Fear

However, I’ve been fearing cancer recurrence. Since I’m no longer covered by insurance, I also fear that I might face financial problems if cancer comes back. I’ve been talking to my close group of friends whenever I’m scared. My parents also assured me that they would help to cover my medical costs if my cancer recurs.

Biggest Fear Friends Support Group 2
There will be good days and bad days. Take them both in stride. Look for support from your family and friends.
