My name is Rocío, I’m from Colombia.
I work in early childhood care, and have two kids. This is how I dealt with stage 2 breast cancer.

I was diagnosed after I found a non-healing scab on my right nipple. I also experienced nipple discharge, redness, irritation and thickening of the breast. Unfortunately, I found that my previous doctor did not give me sufficient information, and I had to get a second opinion.

I felt frightened, nervous, powerless, and worried.

After my diagnosis, I tried my best to eat healthier some days.

I had a mastectomy and lymphadenectomy done. I felt quite neutral after deciding on my treatment, but still hopeful. For now, I’m in remission.

I didn’t face major side effects. However, I faced some financial difficulties as I had to travel 6 hours from my home… and needed money for accommodation and food.

I tried my best to commit to eating healthier some days.
My relationships with my family stayed mostly the same, but I talked to my parents a bit less.

In the next 2 years, I would like to have the means and money to take a family trip. Then, I want to just focus on taking care of myself. My biggest dreams are to overcome cancer and my other health problems, and spend more time with my loved ones.

My biggest fear was not making it. I tried to overcome it by keeping my mind busy, doing crafts, gardening, etc.

Now, I feel thankful and hopeful instead.

To others, I would say: “First of all, be very calm, and hopefully get good psychological support, which I never had. Keep your mind busy with some activity, whether it is gardening, crafts, crafts, yoga, physical, writing, reading, and whatever the work, hopefully it’s financially rewarding and enjoyable ... In short, value yourself.”
