Shamala Profile

A few years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering a small lump near my right breast.

Since then, it's been a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the journey as I endured treatment and its unpleasant side effects.

I took it one day at a time, celebrated small victories and milestones, and today, I am free of cancer and feel more optimistic and grateful for having survived.

Magda Symptoms

My journey began when I discovered a small lump near my right breast. It wasn't painful, but it felt out of place. I realized then that I needed to get it checked out.

The lump ended up being the main symptom that led me to the hospital. I don't recall the doctor's name, but the tests were clear, and I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer.

Cindy Emotions

Hearing the diagnosis was tough, and the feeling of fear and sadness was quite strong. I felt helpless, overwhelmed, and incredibly worried. There was this feeling of emptiness too, and a kind of powerlessness I'd never experienced before.

After the initial shock, I focused on what I could control. I decided to change my nutrition and diet and committed to exercising at least 50% more. I wasn't sure if it would directly fight the cancer, but I started eating a healthier diet for more than half the week.

Medical Care Hospital Undergoing Treatment

After my diagnosis, I worked with my doctors, who recommended a combination of breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) to remove the tumor, followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The decision wasn't easy, but I chose to trust their expertise.

Honestly, there was a mix of emotions after deciding on that initial plan. On the positive side, I felt some relief at having a course of action. There was a flicker of hope that this could beat the cancer. But underneath it all, I was also anxious, scared, and a bit discouraged about what lay ahead.

Unfortunately, the treatment journey didn't go perfectly as planned. During the process, I had to switch things up because the first plan wasn't working as effectively as we'd hoped. My emotions were definitely down at that point. I felt a little angry and even more anxious, but I was determined to keep going.

Hair in a hand

The treatments were rough, that's for sure. I experienced a lot of unpleasant side effects, the worst being fatigue, hair loss, nausea, and vomiting. It was exhausting, both physically and emotionally. To try and manage them, I focused on getting and eating better, taking medication as needed, and even tried a few alternative strategies of my own.

Despite the challenges, I refused to let cancer completely take over my life. For example, I tried to maintain some of my usual routine and even sought out nutritional supplements as an alternative way to support my body. All things considered, I was lucky not to face major financial difficulties during this time.

Anna 53 Lifestyle

I was determined to continue eating a healthier diet every day, and to double my exercise. These choices made me feel like I was taking an active role in my recovery.

Aspirations Family Time

Looking ahead, I have some exciting plans with my family. Next year, I'm traveling with my parents to India. For myself, I'm definitely considering a holiday or two with my husband — some time to relax, de-stress, and create some happy new memories.

My biggest aspiration of all, though, is to be grateful for my life today as a cancer survivor. That perspective has changed everything. Every day, I try to appreciate the little moments and focus on spending time with my loved ones.

Lina Emotions Today

Even though I'm in remission now, the fear of recurrence lingers. I've definitely tried to overcome this fear, by focusing on the positive and staying vigilant about my health.

Sanjana Emotions Today

Compared to the time when I was overtaken by feelings of helplessness and worry, I feel a lot more optimistic today.
