Award-winning actor and food enthusiast Stanley Tucci, widely recognized for his performances in films such as The Devil Wears Prada and The Lovely Bones, was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2017. His battle with the disease, which included chemotherapy and radiation therapy, greatly affected his health, career and relationship with food.

Stanley Tucci’s cancer diagnosis

Before receiving his diagnosis, Tucci experienced persistent throat pain and difficulty swallowing. At first, he ignored the symptoms, assuming they were minor health issues. As the discomfort worsened, he eventually sought medical attention. Doctors discovered a tumor at the base of his tongue, confirming he had throat cancer. Because Tucci’s cancer was caught relatively early, doctors were optimistic about his chances of recovery.

Stanley Tucci’s cancer treatment

Tucci underwent an aggressive treatment plan involving chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Although surgery was not required, the treatments took a heavy toll on his body. He temporarily lost his sense of taste, struggled to speak and swallow, and relied on a feeding tube for six months.

For someone deeply passionate about food and cooking, losing the ability to enjoy meals was emotionally devastating. The side effects also affected his work as an actor, particularly because changes in his voice created uncertainty about his future career.

Tucci admitted that he initially resisted treatment because of the trauma he experienced after losing his first wife to cancer. However, the encouragement and support of his wife, Felicity Blunt, and family helped him move forward with treatment.

Stanley Tucci’s current status

Today, Tucci remains cancer-free and continues working in film, television and food-related projects. He has also become an advocate for oral cancer awareness, encouraging people to seek medical attention for persistent symptoms and emphasizing the importance of early detection.

However, Tucci has experienced lingering side effects. In an appearance on David Tennant’s podcast on March 18, 2025, Tucci spoke about the lasting effects of cancer treatment on his health.

Tucci shared, “what happened was because I had radiation six, seven years ago, it burned out my thyroid”.

Tucci said that his oncologist in New York told him that this is a side effect that sometimes just happens later down the line. He admitted that he was relieved, knowing that it wasn’t some "hideous" new diagnosis.

The actor said that he now takes a synthetic thyroid hormone and undergoes regular blood tests.

While he said the medication has helped, he admitted his energy levels are still not back to normal. "I still get tired in the afternoon," he said.
