World-renowned British chef, restaurant owner and television personality Gordon Ramsay revealed on August 30, 2025, that he had undergone treatment for skin cancer. Ramsay thanked the "incredible" healthcare workers for removing his cancer and used the opportunity to raise awareness on skin cancer.
Who is Gordon Ramsay?
Born in Scotland, Ramsay is a chef who became a household name through hit television shows such as Hell’s Kitchen, MasterChef and Kitchen Nightmares. His fiery temper, sharp wit and high standards have become a trademark. Throughout his career, Ramsay has earned 17 Michelin Stars and has opened restaurants across the globe.
Gordon Ramsay’s diagnosis and treatment
Ramsay shared on Instagram that he had undergone surgery to remove skin cancer cells which were found near his jawline. He had been diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma (BCC).
BCC is the most common type of non-meloma skin cancer, typically arising in areas exposed to the sun or UV radiation. It is usually treatable with surgery, but if left untreated, it may spread and cause damage to surrounding tissue.
Ramsay had undergone surgery to remove the cancerous lesion located near his jawline. He shared photos showing his jawline being bandaged, as well as the scar on his jawline post-surgery. He added that he was extremely grateful to his cancer care team for “their fast reactive work on removing this Basal Cell Carcinoma”. Ramsay also lightheartedly joked about his surgery, writing, “I promise you it’s not a face lift! I’d need a refund.”
Raising awareness on skin cancer
Ramsay took this opportunity to raise awareness on skin cancer and the importance of using sunscreen. He shared, “Please don’t forget your sunscreen this weekend.”
As BCC is primarily caused by exposure to UV radiation, using sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is a simple but powerful tool to protect your skin and lower your risk of developing the disease.
