Who is John Mara?

New York Giants president and CEO John Mara, 70, announced in end September 2025 that he had cancer.

John Mara took over the Giants in 2005, and has been working with them for 34 years, handling the organization’s day-to-day business. He’s the third generation of his family to own the team.

The ownership of the Giants is currently split between the Mara and Tisch families, where the sons have taken over management since their fathers’ passing.

Mara is also currently the chairperson of the NFL's management council.

According to his statement, Mara is currently undergoing cancer treatment, calling his team of doctors “outstanding”. Mara intends to remain involved with the Giants throughout his treatment, and reassures all concerned that he is being well-supported by his family, work, and doctors.

Currently, the statement released did not disclose the type of cancer he was facing.

Although his treatment details remain private, the fact that Mara has chosen to continue on in his role with the Giants throughout this time, suggests that the outlook for him may be optimistic.

At the end of his statement, Mara made a request to the public to respect his and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.

While there has been recent criticism of Mara denying the Saquon Barkley trade request in 2023, the general response from fans to his statement have been positive and supportive, encouraging him to have a speedy recovery.
