Ann Wilson: Cancer Survivor and Heart Frontman Debuts Intimate Documentary

American musician Ann Wilson, best known as the lead singer of the legendary rock band Heart, recently released her debut documentary, In My Voice. The documentary is an intimate first look into the musician’s life, from her childhood to her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction.

Wilson, who is turning 76 later this month, was diagnosed with cancer almost two years ago. Following surgery and chemotherapy, she returned to the stage in 2025. Here is what we know about her career with Heart, her cancer diagnosis and her new documentary.

Wilson, who founded Heart along with her sister Nancy, did so in the male-dominated rock scene of the 1970s. The group dealt with significant misogyny in the music industry at the time.

“You would build yourself up and do something really great, and you’d feel really good about it – then you could get put down and squashed down very easily by the rest of the men,” shared Wilson in an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year. “We were lucky enough to have great people around us, but I know other women who were starting up close to our time that had to rebel as hard as they could to get anything happening at all.”

Despite the challenges that came with being a rock band fronted by women in the ‘70s, Heart’s debut album made it to the US Top 10 in 1975. The band went on to see even greater success in the ‘80s, with not one but two singles that topped the US charts. Heart was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023; that same year, Ann and Nancy were presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

In early July 2024, Wilson shared a post on her social media announcing that she “recently underwent an operation to remove something that, as it turns out, was cancerous.”

“The operation was successful, and I’m feeling great, but my doctors are now advising me to undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I’ve decided to do it,” shared the singer.

The announcement was made while Heart was on tour. Following Wilson’s diagnosis, the group decided to postpone the rest of the tour. “Please know that I absolutely plan to be back on stage in 2025,” Wilson assured the public. “This is merely a pause. I’ve much more to sing.” However, she did not share further information about the nature of the cancer or her diagnosis.

In September 2024, the musician announced that she had completed all treatment and was ready to hit the road in the new year. “Chemo is no joke. It takes a lot out of a person. And then that two weeks of waiting around for test results, a form of mental torture,” shared Wilson, recognising challenges faced by others who had been on the same path. “Luckily, for me, when the results finally came, they were the good kind!”

In My Voice premiered on May 11, 2026, in Wilson’s hometown, Seattle. The premiere was part of a 10-day tour across the United States and Canada, with each screening followed by an intimate dialogue with the singer. The tour concluded earlier this month with a final show in Boston.

The documentary includes appearances from Wilson’s close friends and family members, as well as highlights from Wilson’s exclusive collection of home movies, journals, and photographs.
