On March 16, 2026, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles revealed that she had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer the week prior.

Trump urged Wiles, who is regarded as one of his most critical and influential aides, to take as much time away from her responsibilities as she needed to recover. However, in a statement acknowledging the diagnosis, Wiles clarified that she intended to continue serving the White House while receiving treatment for the cancer.

“Nearly one in eight women in the United States will face this diagnosis,” she said. “These women continue to raise their families, go to work and serve their communities with strength and determination,” noted the 68-year-old.

Wiles’s role as the Chief of Staff

Susie Wiles is the first woman to serve as Chief of Staff, a role considered to be one of the most demanding in the White House. The Chief of Staff’s responsibilities include but are not limited to advising the president on policy and politics, mediating disputes between cabinet officers, managing the president’s schedule and determining who has access to the president.

Several members of the Trump administration noted that Wiles is an exceptional fit for the role. She has been credited with constraining infighting, guiding Trump’s agenda and stabilizing the administration amid a turbulent first term. She is also known to have been one of Trump’s most trusted political advisers for almost a decade, having managed his 2016 campaign in Florida and his 2024 campaign for president.

These achievements are no small feat, considering that Wiles has herself described Trump as having an “alcoholic’s personality.” Despite her blunt remarks, Trump has fiercely defended her on several occasions. She is described as having imposed an impressive level of discipline in the White House, all while allowing Trump to act without constraint.

One long-time Trump adviser described Wiles as “basically doing what [they] were told is impossible.” “I don’t know what any of us, especially the president, would do without Susie.”

Trump’s response to Wiles’ diagnosis

Trump announced Wiles’s diagnosis on Truth Social, an alternative social media platform founded by Trump in response to his ban from mainstream platforms. In his post, he referred to Wiles as “tough and deeply committed to serving the American people,” and described her prognosis as “excellent.” “She will soon be better than ever!”

Soon after the news of her diagnosis, Wiles appeared alongside Trump at the Kennedy Centre in Washington. “She had a diagnosis, you probably saw it, and she’s gonna take care of it immediately as opposed to waiting,” Trump shared with the audience. “She’ll be around for a long time.”
