Roles in cell function

  • Spans the width of the cell membrane to receive external stimuli and transmit the signal into the cells
  • Signal internalized by RET is further passed on through signalling pathways to trigger cell growth and maturation (differentiation into cells with specific functions)
  • RET plays an important role in the normal development of kidneys, sperms and several kinds of nerve cells.
  • Cells with mutated ROS1 are constantly being activated and grow without control to form cancerous tumors.

Types of cancer linked to mutation

  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
  • Papillary thyroid carcinoma
  • Medullary thyroid carcinoma
