Blanca Profile

Hi, I’m Blanca. I’m battling stage 3 breast cancer.

Symptoms Mammogram 1

I was taking a shower and as always I was examining my breasts when I felt a lump under my right breast. I called my doctor the next day and he ordered a mammogram and an ultrasound. After these tests, I (got) a biopsy ending on positive results for cancer. I was eventually diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.

Emotions Negative Positive 1

It was overwhelming and worrying, to say the least. I was in constant fear. However, I held on to courage and remained optimistic.

Anna 53 Lifestyle

After getting diagnosed with breast cancer, I changed my diet. I made the effort to eat healthier more often.

Joanna Treatment

The recommended treatment plan included a

Trusting my doctor's recommendation, I eventually opted for these treatments except radiation therapy.

I didn't feel any strong emotions when I decided on my treatment plan. I just knew I had to remain hopeful. I have completed treatment, but I'm still on hormone therapy today.

Side Effects Financial Burden 2

Due to treatment, I experienced side effects like

  • hair loss
  • lymphedema
  • peripheral neuropathy

I dealt with it through prescribed medication. Unfortunately, cancer treatment was a real financial burden for me because I lost my Medicaid insurance and had to pay out of pocket.

Lifestyle Text Call

After treatment, I made sure to stick with my new diet, eating healthier 3 to 5 days and week. Since getting diagnosed, I called and texted my parents more often and made sure to spend more time with my children. Unfortunately, we have taken fewer family trips since my cancer diagnosis.

Jayne Lifestyle

I plan to enjoy more time together with my family and visit my family in Puerto Rico at least once a year. Personally, I just plan to live one day at a time and to spend more time with (my loved ones).

I just live one day at a time. I don't have any big dreams or aspirations. Only to see my kids grow and achieve their dreams.

Biggest Fear Music

Throughout my journey, my biggest fear has been that all my other medical conditions get worse and the treatment would not work. To cope, I just listen to music. Try to stay busy most of the time so I don't think too much.

Emotions Nice Sky 1

Today, I feel optimistic, courageous, and thankful for each day.

Mia Words

To those on their own cancer journey, I'd say:

"To follow the doctor’s recommendations and treatment. To take time to take care of yourself. To always check yourself and if (you) feel something, seek medical advice. To stay positive and find things that keep you busy and away from bad thoughts. To live one day at a time."
