Hi, I'm Carole from the United Kingdom. I’m a breast cancer survivor, and I was initially diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2019. I was just declared cancer-free at the end of 2023.

Discovering dimpled skin and a small lump around my breast led to my diagnosis. I didn’t experience any other symptoms.

Initially, I felt quite frightened and resentful. The disease can make you feel isolated and powerless at times.

After my diagnosis, I tried to cut down on my alcohol consumption, and started exercising more.

My treatment journey was tough but worth it. Though the initial recommended plan included breast-conserving surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, I eventually opted for a mastectomy, rather than breast-conserving surgery, as well as hormonal therapy based on my own research. While I was relieved to finally decide on the treatment plan, I was also scared and a little discouraged after the whole process.

During my treatment, I faced hair loss, a loss of appetite, and more nausea and vomiting. It was a struggle to deal with them, but I managed on my own.

Since my treatment, I’ve continued exercising much more often. I try to focus on staying more active nowadays.

My plans for the future are simple: to survive. I've never really had big dreams, but I’d like to still be around for my family.

My biggest fear throughout my recovery has been the thought of dying, and leaving my grandchildren behind.

It’s been a long journey, and I still feel powerless and insecure at times. However, I still feel hopeful and thankful for getting to where I am today.

For others facing the same, I’d say this: “Try to stay optimistic, positive and do what's right for you.”
