I’m 米娜, from Taiwan. I work in e-commerce and I have two kids. I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer.

During a health check-up, they suspected myeloma cancer, so the exams were initially focused on that, while my breast examination was postponed. After confirming that myeloma could be ruled out, I felt very happy — but when I went for the next check-up, my doctor immediately told me to do a biopsy, and it was found to be breast cancer.
Still, I wanted to consult a more experienced doctor, and I felt like my first doctor didn’t give me enough information. My family also wanted another doctor’s opinion.

When I received the news, I had a mix of emotions:
- Frightened, insecure, nervous and overwhelmed
- Disappointed, grief, isolated and powerless
- Confused

After hearing the news, I started on a healthier diet most days. I also started exercising at least 50% more.

My doctors recommended a lumpectomy, lymphadenectomy, radiation therapy and hormone therapy. After deciding on it, I felt a bit happier, more relieved, motivated and hopeful.
I was very worried about how the treatment would go. Every follow-up visit was very stressful and made me uneasy.
Right now, I’ve completed my treatment, but I’m on hormone therapy.

In terms of side effects, the ones that affected me the most were: fatigue, hair loss and weight fluctuations. To manage them, I relied on increased exercise frequency and better nutrition.

I tried my best to commit to exercising more, but found myself spending a little bit less time with my parents and children.

With my family, we want to try to go overseas each year. For myself, I want to go out into nature more often and exercise more. My biggest dream is to visit Europe, and hopefully complete this with my family.

It’s the fear of recurrence and being unable to eliminate the cancer. What kept me going was making an effort to change my diet and exercise.

Now, I feel thankful, confident and courageous.

To others, I would say: “After being diagnosed, fear is a given. Don’t worry. Remember to express everything you want to ask and say. Everything will move in the right direction. Remember to focus on yourself again and love yourself first.”
