Hi, I’m 燕子. This is the story of how a text message changed my life.

At the age of 45, I received a free mammogram notification via text message. While waiting at the ophthalmologist, I also scheduled the mammogram. Upon receiving abnormal results, I went to the nearby hospital to confirm the diagnosis and treatment. I was eventually diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. I had no symptoms.

Receiving my diagnosis left me fearful and surprised. I was confused, nervous, worried and just overwhelmed in general.

I started exercising slightly more after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

As recommended by my doctor, I had the entire affected breast (mastectomy) and lymph nodes (lymphadenectomy) removed, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted drug therapy. I felt very positive after working out this treatment plan. I was happy, relieved, motivated and hopeful.
I’ve since completed treatment but am still on hormone medication.

Unfortunately, I did experience some side effects. Diarrhea, fatigue and hair loss were the ones that affected me the most. I improved my nutrition and took the medication prescribed to me to manage these side effects.

I continued to exercise more regularly after starting treatment. I’ve also contacted and visited my parents more since this whole ordeal started.

I would personally love to travel abroad and improve my relationship with my spouse. With regards to my family, I can’t make any plans at all since I have an elderly mother-in-law with dementia to take care of at home.
My biggests dreams are just to travel abroad and live life happily. I want to have meals with my loved ones often and travel together, with the hope that everyone stays healthy.

My biggest fear is the recurrence of cancer. But there’s no time to worry about a recurrence, as I keep myself very busy.

It’s been years since I was first diagnosed, but I’m still plagued by feelings of:
- Helplessness and worry
- Insecurity and worthlessness
I feel rejected by my husband. I am resentful and question “why me?”
I’m also disappointed and lonely. I feel so empty, powerless and vulnerable. I feel like there is no future.

See and appreciate what you have.
