National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual celebration for those who have survived cancer and serves as an inspiration for those affected by the disease. Led by the National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) Foundation, National Cancer Survivors Day is observed to raise awareness about cancer and to honour those who are or have been affected by the disease.

According to the NCSD Foundation, a cancer survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.

When is National Cancer Survivors Day?

Every year, on the first Sunday of June, National Cancer Survivors Day is celebrated by many countries across the world. This year, it was observed on June 7 2026.

On this day, people with a history of cancer come together to celebrate milestones in their cancer journey and to share their own personal stories.

Despite its name, National Cancer Survivors Day is for everyone, be it cancer survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals or family members and friends, to come together to celebrate survivorship and inspire hope for those still afflicted by cancer.

How can you contribute?

There are many ways that you can play a part during National Cancer Survivors Day. You could organise an event within your community, such as a simple gathering or awareness campaign. It could also be a simple celebration individually or with a small group of friends and family, sharing your story or simply practicing self-care. There are also many fundraisers and charities that you can donate to, to show your support to cancer survivors.

Surviving cancer is only one part of the journey and the challenges that follow often require just as much strength, resilience and support. Many cancer survivors have to adapt to a new normal even after being declared cancer-free, from having to deal with long-term physical side effects to the emotional stress and fear of cancer recurrence. Sharing and reading their stories not only sheds light on these often unseen struggles but also offers encouragement, comfort and hope to others navigating similar experiences.

The global burden of cancer

Cancer remains one of the deadliest diseases, with approximately 20 million new cases of cancer being diagnosed globally in 2022 alone. Fortunately, with the advancement of science and technology, cancer has become more treatable, especially in the early stages. As of January 2025, it was found that 1 in 18 Americans are cancer survivors and this number is expected to grow.

This National Cancer Survivors Day, we can all play our part by raising awareness about the disease, learning more about cancer as well as supporting our loved ones who have been or are still affected by cancer. By doing so, we can spread hope, encourage early detection and screening as well as remind those affected by cancer that they are never alone.
