On January 17 2024, it was announced that the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, had been hospitalized after a “successful abdominal surgery”. She remained hospitalized in the London Clinic for 10–14 days before returning to Kensington palace, where she continued with her recovery. It was only two months later on March 22 2024 when Kate revealed in a video that she was diagnosed with cancer.
Kate Middleton’s diagnosis
In March 2024, the Princess officially announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer through a video on her official YouTube channel. Her diagnosis left her and her husband, Prince William, in a “huge shock”. She shared, "In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment."
While there was no confirmation of the type of cancer she had, it was speculated that Kate may have been diagnosed with uterine or ovarian cancer. This was primarily due to the fact that her cancer was diagnosed after an abdominal surgery for a non-cancerous condition.
Kate Middleton’s treatment
Following her cancer diagnosis in March 2024, Kate underwent chemotherapy for 6 months. In June 2024, she provided an update on her treatment, sharing, “I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.”
Although she was undergoing treatment at that time, the Princess still made her first public appearance since her diagnosis at Trooping the Colour, an annual ceremony celebrating the king's birthday.
Kate completed her chemotherapy treatment in September 2024. Following which, she shared a video documenting her cancer journey so far, emphasizing that she is focused on staying cancer-free.
“The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you,” she shared in a heartfelt post. “With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything. This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.”
On January 15 2025, Kate was officially declared cancer-free. She shared that her journey had been “complex, scary and unpredictable” but she remained thankful for all the support she had. She also shared that she has made some changes to her lifestyle after being diagnosed with cancer, such as reducing her alcohol intake.
“You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment. Treatment is done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal,’ but actually the phase afterwards is really, really difficult,” she shared. “You have to find your new normal and that takes time … And it’s a roller coaster, it’s not smooth, like you expect it to be. But the reality is you go through hard times.”
Cancer advocacy
Throughout her cancer journey, Kate has also been actively supporting other cancer patients. She visited hospitals and cancer patients and openly shared her personal experience with cancer. Her actions and messages have offered comfort and visibility to countless others navigating similar challenges.
“To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness can come light so let that light shine bright,” she wrote.
Kate has also been using her platform and attending events to actively speak out about cancer. Recently, on World Cancer Day, she posted a heartfelt video on her official Instagram account.
“On the occasion of World Cancer Day, my thoughts are with all those who are facing a diagnosis, undergoing treatment, or seeking the path to recovery. Cancer touches so many lives: not only patients, but also families, friends, and caregivers,” she shared.
