World Cancer Day is a global initiative, led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to raise awareness about cancer and to encourage public action to address the cancer epidemic. Started in 2000, this initiative brings the world together and acts as a powerful reminder that everyone has a role to play in the fight against cancer.
When is World Cancer Day?
Every year, on Feb 4, World Cancer Day is observed by many countries across the world. Various activities and events take place on this day, from sharing cancer stories to taking part in social media challenges. Landmarks around the world, such as the CN Tower in Toronto and the Almaty Tower in Kazakhstan, light up in orange and blue, the official World Cancer Day colors.
This year marks the second year that World Cancer Day is being observed under the theme “United by Unique”. This theme focuses on placing people at the centre of cancer care and explores new ways of making a difference. This campaign calls for a fundamental shift in cancer care worldwide towards a more people-centred approach, oriented around individuals and communities rather than just the disease.
Global impact of cancer
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide till this day. In 2022 alone, approximately 20 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed and 10 million deaths were recorded worldwide. Lung cancer remains the most common and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths today.
Moreover, cancer not only places a heavy burden on affected individuals and their families but it also affects healthcare systems and economies worldwide. Despite major advances in detection and treatment of the disease, there is still a huge barrier to overcoming the epidemic.
How can you contribute?
Cancer is not just a medical condition, but it is inherently a human experience. Behind every diagnosis is a person, a family and a community navigating fear through resilience and courage. This world cancer day, everyone has the potential to make a difference.
There are many ways you can play a part in the fight against cancer. The UICC has encouraged people around the world to share their cancer stories, whether you are a cancer patient, survivor or have a family member with cancer. Cancer stories highlight the human side of the illness, helping others connect, understand and care more deeply for those affected by the disease.

Additionally, the UICC has also introduced the “Upside Down” challenge as a creative initiative to raise awareness about cancer on social media. The challenge originated from the idea that cancer turns your world upside down and changes your perspective on everything. By posting pictures or videos upside down, the challenge invites people to pause, reflect and see the world through the eyes of those affected by cancer.
World Cancer Day
World Cancer Day 2026 is a reminder that by standing united and playing our part, we can overcome and reduce the burden of cancer. By raising awareness of the disease, we can work together to close the gaps, so that early diagnosis and quality treatment are accessible to all.
